The Island Famous Story
In 1998, here lay a vacant lot and there lay three vacant houses and herein lay a great idea. The land was prime, yet undeveloped, and the houses were set to be demolished. Our founders set out to save the houses—picking them up, bringing them here and building a restaurant incorporating them. After many months of hard work, their dreams became a reality and The Spot was born.
In 2002, The Spot was purchased by local resident and BOI (Born on Island) Dennis Byrd. He began here when we originally opened, working his way up from cashier to cook, dishwasher to delivery boy. He learned the ropes of the restaurant business, and accomplished his dream of owning a restaurant, by purchasing the only restaurant he had ever worked in. You'll still see him here today taking your order, cleaning your table, tending bar or just hanging out on the patio.
With Dennis at the helm, The Spot has grown, expanding year after year. We introduced the laidback Island style of the Tiki Bar in '05, brought Drip, Galveston's hottest Patio Bar & Lounge, onto the scene in '09, and added Squeeze Ritas & Tequilas, offering 20 plus margaritas ranging in size from 12 to 100 oz. and more than 50 types of tequila, in '10. Our newest venue, RumShack, opened Cinco de Mayo '11, combining the best ocean views with the best variety of rum and tropical drinks on the island—all with a Caribbean flair.
